Stereophonics storm offstage at Singapore concert

Stereophonics stormed offstage at a gig in Singapore after lead singer Kelly Jones was hit by a sandal.

The band were performing at Fort Canning Park on Friday (April 30) when a fan hurled a flip-flop at Jones' face, who halted their performance to pick up the object.

The singer then muttered "thank you" to the crowd before tossing the shoe aside and walking off stage with his bandmates. 

Security guards hauled the man responsible outside, before Jones and his bandmates returned to the stage to finish their set, reports Yahoo News.

The band are set to head out on a UK tour later this month which will see them perform the first gig at the new Cardiff City Stadium.

Stereophonics announce 2010 UK arena tour and ticket details

Stereophonics have announced an UK arena tour for next year.

The band, who release new studio album 'Keep Calm and Carry On’ on November 16, will hit the road in spring 2010.

STEREOPHONICS TO PERFORM IN THE SINGSTAR VIP ROOMS

Ahead of their massive Cardiff City Stadium concert on June 5th, Stereophonics will feature in the next SingStar VIP event, coming to ‘Playstation Home’ on March 25th.

The band returns home on March 1st to start their UK arena tour. Before hitting the road however, the band will make a stop to play an exclusive virtual concert in Sony Playstation’s online space ‘Home’ on March 25th.

The Welsh rockers have a busy time ahead of their Cardiff gig. Just completing the European leg of their sold out Keep Calm And Carry On World Tour, they fly out for Vancouver this week for a special performance at the Medal ceremonies at the Winter Olympics on February 20th. 

‘Playstation Home’ is Sony Playstation’s virtual gaming world which has been downloaded by 11 millions users worldwide. The virtual concert featuring will take place inside the Singstar VIP room and will include live footage and backstage interviews with members of the band. What’s more, there will also be a virtual meet and greet with the band where users will be able to participate in a live Q&A session.

If that alone hasn’t excited fans, the Stereophonics extravaganza doesn't stop there. A SongPack from the band will be winging its way to the SingStore in a special Stereophonics competition coming later this month!

Band members

Kelly Jones  is a Welsh singer-songwriter and guitarist and the lead singer of the band Stereophonics. Influenced by classic rock bands such as The Who, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and the Sex Pistols,  Jones is noted for his strong, gravelly voice, which has been described as "whisky" vocals.As a lyricist, Jones is also strongly influenced by Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Otis Redding. Jones is also known in the media for his cynical view of fame and criticism of manufactured mainstream pop music.

Mainstream success:

In February 1998, they received a Brit Award for Best New Group, the same week as a re-issue of Local Boy in the Photograph made number 14 in the charts and their first album went gold in the UK, selling over 100,000 copies. During that year Stereophonics had successful tours in Europe, Australia and the USA. They performed a milestone concert on 12 June 1998 at Cardiff Castle in front of 10,000 people which was considered a major success.

During 1999, after playing another key gig at the now rebuilt Morfa Stadium in Swansea on 31 July 1999,they released the "difficult second album" which was entitled Performance & Cocktails. This was their first #1 album and it set the trend for their albums which at time of writing, all went straight in at the top spot. Performance & Cocktails showed how three boys from a small town in Wales grew into rockstars with stories to tell. Kelly no longer sang of small town matters but instead roared out anthems like Bartender & The Thief & Just Looking, and wrote tracks such as Plastic California documenting his time in the States. During this time they also collaborated with Welsh singer Tom Jones on a cover of the Randy Newman song Mama Told Me Not To Come for his album Reload.

In 2000, rumours that the band were splitting up ran wild when Jones announced a solo tour, however on the opening night of the tour in Vicar Street in Dublin, he came onto the stage and said "How's it going? This is about the band splitting up... it's bollocks"

In the following year, The Stereophonics were scheduled to tour with Oasis, but due to an unfortunate family-related event the band pulled out. They did not resurface until later in the year where they began recording for the sixth studio album Pull The Pin which was released on 15 October 2007. Pull The Pin is an album that returns to the band's classic rock roots evident in the first album and the influence of 70's rock can be heard in numerous tracks.

Javier's projects

Drummer Javier Weyler released a solo album, titled Lagrima, in 2007, under the name Capitan Melao. "Lagrima" is the name of a composition by art-rock guitarist Phil Manzanera that appears on the album 801 Live, with Brian Eno and others. In Spanish, the word "Capitan" means "captain", while "Melao" is a Latin American slang word for swing, rhythm or soul. You can listen to his songs on Capitan Melao myspace.

Javier announced, in mid-February, that he was working back on his own project, as the band stopped touring.

The Best of Stereophonics is a compilation album of greatest hits by Stereophonics. It features tracks from all six of the band's previous albums, beginning from the 1997 debut release, Word Gets Around all the way through to 2007's Pull The Pin, plus two brand new songs, "You’re My Star" and "My Own Worst Enemy". "You're My Star" was also released as a single. The album is available in 20-track edition, 40-track 2CD Deluxe edition and DVD edition containing all the band's music videos, best live performances and some extra footage. It has gained double platinum status, having sold over 720,000 copies worldwide and over 670,000 in the UK.
